There is a particular kind of gallantry in carrying your bat, and Harry Field managed exactly that at Bracknell — 45 not out while the innings came and went around him. In the end, though, it was not quite enough.
Binfield's 2nd XI, put in to bat, never quite built the platform they wanted. Field held one end with real composure, captain Mikey Allan-Canty made a busy 43 and Ollie Lovegrove 34, but wickets fell at just enough of a clip to keep the total to 184 all out.
One hundred and eighty-four is a total you can defend on the right afternoon, and Binfield's bowlers gave it an honest go, but Bracknell United had the measure of the chase. They reached their target for the loss of five wickets, the winning runs arriving in the 35th over — comfortable enough in the end.
Faiq Nawaz and Paul Morgan umpired a good-natured contest, and there was plenty for Binfield to take from it — not least Field's unbeaten vigil. On another afternoon, 184 holds up.
