It is a curious truth of cricket that the most satisfying wins are often the quietest. Binfield's 1st XI, asked to field first by captain Sam Kennett, made little fuss and a great deal of sense.
James Frost was the chief disturber of Purley's peace, his 3-29 the best of a well-drilled effort that kept the visitors to 141. Austyn Jackson (40) and Patrick Allen (31) offered the sternest resistance, but the innings never quite gathered the momentum it wanted.
The reply was calm itself. Michael Carson made a watchful 44 before retiring, Chris Morgan weighed in with 33, and Kennett was there at the close, 28 not out, as Binfield reached 142 for the loss of three. A seven-wicket win, with time and wickets to spare.
For the home supporters — and, happily, for those following the stream from further afield — it was an afternoon of quiet control. First-rate stuff from a side in good order.
