Some days a bowler does everything asked of him and a little more, and still finishes on the losing side. Spare a thought, my dear old thing, for Thomas Hyde.

Hyde was superb, his 5-40 the outstanding return of the afternoon, but Earley had just enough elsewhere. Syed Sohail Shah anchored the visitors with an unbeaten 51 and Kiran Susarla made 37 as they reached 234 for eight.

Chasing was always going to be a stiff task, and though Anthony Goff (38) and Steve Jeffery (35) gave it honest effort, the innings folded for 183. Fifty-one runs the margin, and a five-wicket haul that deserved a happier home.

He deserved better, and so did his side โ€” but there will be brighter days to come.
