Runs on the board, my dear old things, remain the oldest currency in cricket, and the 3rd XI banked a small fortune of them at Sandhurst. Having chosen to bat under a high summer sun, Lewis Hall set the tone with a composed 51, Andy Mills stroked his way to a lovely 74, and Tom Phizackerley's 38 kept things moving before Jaden Slaughter cut loose with 59. Khan Qadar was the pick of the home attack with 2 for 28, but by the close of the 45 overs Binfield had 292 for 5 on the board, Harry Jones unbeaten on 21 - and Sandhurst faced a mountain of six and a half an over.

They did not lack for spirit. Arjuna Ranaweera played the innings of the Sandhurst reply, a fine 81, and Khan Qadar's 42 gave the early overs some snap. But Rahul Gupta would not be denied: his six overs brought 3 for 30 - bowling Zack Waight, having Qadar caught by Hall, and Narendra Gogna stumped smartly by Luke Taylor - and for good measure it was Gupta's throw that ran out the dangerous Ranaweera. A hand in four of the eight wickets to fall; a day's work to savour. Jaden Slaughter rounded off a splendid personal afternoon with a miserly 1 for 26 from eight overs, and Sandhurst closed on 218 for 8, some 74 runs shy.

The 22 points keep the 3rd XI third in Division 6B on 178, breathing down the necks of Littlewick Green (179) and leaders Calcot (196) - and both won on Saturday too, Calcot by 87 runs against Braywood and Littlewick Green by 48 against Reading, so the top of the table is turning into quite the procession of heavyweights. Waltham St Lawrence and Boyne Hill also won their matches. Warm regards to umpire Darren Davison, who kept proceedings ticking along in the heat. Splendidly done, one and all.
