Binfield Cricket Club 2nd XI v Royal Ascot CC 2nd XI on Sat 28 May 2022 at 13.00
Binfield Cricket Club Lost By 1 Wicket

Match report Week 4 of the Season and a home game for the 2s vs Royal Ascot 2s.

As Rocky once said "it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

Having finally won a toss , the decision to bat first on a good looking flat track was made. Turned out the rain in the week had given the bowlers a bit more to work with than usual. Howson finding some swing and seam movement and the edges of the Binfield batters regularly. Perhaps the shot selection wasn't the best but perhaps it was one of those days where you have to say well bowled.

15 overs and the juice that was in the pitch had dried up however the score was 40 for 6! A lot of work to do to get any sort of total on the board. Atkins and Edgington came together and put 49 on for the 7th wicket until Edgington fell to one that seamed down the hill. Useful runs for the lower order got us to a total 155 AO. Well below par, but one we hoped our bowlers could defend.

Hayman and Atkins opened up and after a couple of very close LBW shouts the breakthrough was made when Ascot Skipper Corsini was struck on the pad and took the decision away from the umpire as he turned and walked off.

Wickets then started to fall in regular intervals and when Williams removed the top scoring Warren for his first 2nd XI wicket, it left Ascot 79 - 5 and a game that could go either way.

Summers and Sohail led the counter attack with a mixture of good shots and well placed mishits and between them put Ascot in a strong position. Wickets falling at the other end always kept Binfield in the game. With 25 runs required and 2 wickets in hand the crowd weren't sure which way it was going to go.

Unfortunately for the home side despite taking a 9th wicket the winning runs were edged through a vacant 3rd slip and were met by cheers of the visiting side. A good game played in good spirit.

To get so close to snatching victory was a huge disappointment but the game was lost with the bat. We go again next week, longest trip of the season to Newbury, where hopefully we can get back to winning ways
