Binfield Cricket Club's Women's 1st XI lost by 108 runs at home on Sunday 16 August 2026, a Home Counties Women's Cricket League (HCWCL) Premier Division fixture decided by a 168-run second-wicket stand in which Meika King made 122 for Falkland CC, Berks; Zoe Docherty answered with 4 for 38 and Evie Folwell made 60, but Binfield were bowled out for 161.

One partnership decided this, and it was a very fine one. Meika King and Ava Hewetson came together for Falkland with the score at 23 for 1 and were not separated until it read 191 for 2 - 168 runs in a single stand, very nearly two-thirds of everything Falkland made all afternoon. Binfield had won the toss on a warm Forest Road afternoon and chosen to field; for six overs that looked an inspired decision, and thereafter it looked considerably less so.

Zoe Docherty, Binfield's captain, had made the early breakthrough herself, having Poppy Camplin caught by Tatiana Sumares in the sixth over. What followed was King at her most commanding: 122 from 92 balls with eighteen fours and a six, a strike rate of 132 in a 40-over game, which is a great deal quicker than the format usually invites. The chart of her innings has one very steep passage in it - Falkland went from 78 after thirteen overs to 120 after fifteen, 42 runs in the space of two overs - and that burst was the afternoon in miniature. Hewetson's own 46 from 55 balls was the perfect foil, busy and unshowy at the other end.

Binfield did not stop trying, and the figures show it. Ellie Montgomerie was the one who finally prised the stand apart, bowling eight overs for 33 with a maiden - an over that cost nothing - and taking both King and Hewetson - an economy rate of 4.13, meaning she conceded barely four runs an over on a day when the ball was flying. Docherty came back at the death and struck twice in the final over, finishing with 4 for 38, and Evie Pass and Phebe Salter both went at under five an over. The blemish was in the extras column: Binfield's bowlers gave Falkland 44 runs without a ball being struck, 25 of them wides, which is 16 per cent of the visitors' 269 handed over for nothing. Falkland closed on 269 for 6.

The reply, and this is the part that will sting, was for a good while genuinely ahead of the game. Compare the two run charts over by over and Binfield were in front of Falkland's own line from the second over to the thirteenth - 89 to Falkland's 78 at that stage - which is the mark of a side chasing properly rather than merely hoping. Evie Folwell was the reason: 60 from 48 balls with nine fours, striking at 125, taking the attack on rather than waiting for it.

Then came the collapse, and it was brutally quick. Folwell was bowled by Kira Engall in the nineteenth over with the score at 107 for 4, and within six overs Binfield were 126 for 7 - Grace Gamble, Holly McFarlane and Docherty herself all gone for the addition of just 19 runs. Poppy Camplin was the author of much of it, and her figures are the best on either side: eight overs, two maidens, 19 runs, 3 wickets, an economy of 2.37. Phebe Salter alone stood firm, 30 not out from 32 balls, and her 26-run eighth-wicket stand with Lucy Jeffery dragged the total from 126 to 152, but she ran out of partners at 161.

Falkland take 20 points from the fixture and Binfield 5, which leaves the Women's 1st XI eighth in the HCWCL Premier Division with 57 points, and Falkland fourth on 148. It has been a hard season in the club's toughest division, and there is no disguising a 108-run defeat. But Docherty's 37 wickets at 12.73 across the summer and Folwell's eight half-centuries are not the numbers of a side that has stopped competing - and on Sunday, for thirteen overs at least, they were the ones in front.
