My dear old thing, don't be fooled for a moment by the gentle word 'friendly' - there was nothing especially gentle about the way the 6th XI went about a thoroughly entertaining afternoon at Desborough School, winning by 17 runs in a game that gave both sides a proper run-out and better than 470 runs to enjoy between them.
Binfield batted first and, after Ram Devarakonda fell early, settled into a lovely rhythm. Charlie Miles anchored the innings with 58 from 69 balls, eleven fours in it, and around him the middle order flowed: Vikram Duraiswamy made 22, and Tatiana Sumares a stylish 44 from 67 balls that included the innings' first six. The stand of the day was Sumares and the skipper Ralph Weeks adding 76 for the fourth wicket, carrying Binfield from 123 to 199 and setting the platform for a flourish.
And what a flourish Weeks himself provided. His 72 came from just 50 balls - twelve fours and a six, a strike rate of 144 - the sort of captain's innings that drags a good total towards a formidable one. Harry Richardson chipped in with a brisk 20 from 13, and though Holyport's George Brockwell and Hashan Fernando pulled things back at the death with a wicket apiece, Binfield closed on a handsome 244 for 7.

Two hundred and forty-five to win gave Holyport a real chase, and Mark Denholm made a spirited fist of it with 75. But Binfield shared the bowling around to good effect and kept finding a way through: Ollie Holden was the pick with 3 for 35, Josh McFarlane took 2 for 40, and no fewer than six Binfield bowlers claimed a wicket as Holyport were bowled out for 227, seventeen runs shy of the target.
A friendly it may have been, with no points at stake, but a win is a win and this was a richly enjoyable one - runs, wickets and a captain in glorious touch. A thoroughly happy way to spend a friendly Saturday.
