Binfield Cricket Club's 2nd XI drew away at Fleet CC on Saturday 1 August 2026, a Thames Valley Cricket League (TVCL) Division 3A fixture in which Ollie Cummings took 5 for 31 and Ben Clark 3 for 39, but Bruce Friderichs' 137 and Nilesh Odera's 77 lifted Fleet to 280, leaving Binfield to bat out forty-eight overs and finish on 151 for 8 with the draw secured.

Do not let the word 'drawn' fool you into thinking nothing happened here. This was a day of two entirely separate cricket matches played end to end: one in which Binfield had Fleet four down for 94 and were thoroughly on top, and another in which they simply refused to lose.

Mikey Allan-Canty won the toss and put Fleet in, and for a good long while it looked an inspired decision. Ben Clark, who would finish with 15 overs for 39 runs at an economy of 2.60 - well under three an over - had Nir Vaishnav leg-before, then Lewis Burns caught, then Riley Huddlestone leg-before, and with Ritesh Shetty chipping in Fleet were 94 for 4 and in some difficulty.

What happened next rather took the game away. Bruce Friderichs made 137 from 132 balls with seventeen fours and four sixes, and Nilesh Odera 77 from 87 with sixteen fours, and between them they added 174 for the fifth wicket - taking Fleet from 94 for 4 to 268 for 5 and putting the game entirely beyond Binfield's reach. Then, just as suddenly, it collapsed: Ollie Cummings bowled Odera, bowled Alex Mynard and bowled Jack Lysaght, three wickets at the same score of 268, and Fleet lost their last six wickets for twelve runs to be all out for 280. Cummings bowled Friderichs too, for good measure, and finished with 9 overs, three maidens, 31 runs and five wickets at an economy of 3.44 - the best return of the match, though not the tightest spell of it: that belonged to Fleet's Sam Holmes, of whom more shortly.

Two hundred and eighty-one to win in forty-eight overs was never a realistic chase, and the scoreboard shows Binfield did not get one. Harry Maxfield made a bright 32 from 28 balls with seven fours before Josh Watts had him caught, but from 57 for 4 the innings became an exercise in occupation rather than accumulation. The run chart tells the story better than any adjective: 57 after ten overs, 80 after twenty, 109 after thirty, 131 after forty - a line that barely climbs at all while Fleet's, at the same points, had gone 64, 101, 155, 214.

Dan Humphrey's 22 took 49 balls, and Harry D'Amaro-Field - who had kept wicket all afternoon - made 33 in a long, watchful stay that was worth far more than its runs. Sam Holmes bowled fourteen overs for 21 runs, five of them maidens, which is as unrelenting a spell as you will see; Josh Watts took 4 for 37 from thirteen. When the eighth wicket fell at 151 there were still overs to survive, and Tom Nower and Ritesh Shetty duly survived them, unbeaten at the close. Twelve points from a day that could easily have yielded none, and the 2nd XI stay fifth in Division 3A on 197. Sometimes the most valuable innings on the card is the one with the smallest number beside it.
