Sonning CC 2nd XI v Binfield Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 21 May 2022 at 13:00
Binfield Cricket Club Won By 63 Runs
Match report
As Saturday rolled around once again Binfield 2’s travelled down the A329 to Sonning with 2 opportunities in front of them. Would they see the lesser spotted Clooney’s or more importantly could they make it three wins out of three?
They were four changes to last weeks team. In came Tim Vines, Lewis Hall, Tom Williams and Matt Hayman. For Vines it was his first appearance for the 2’s since 2018 as he looked to return from injury and prove the doubters over his fitness wrong. It was also a debut for 14-year-old Tom Williams who had been performing well in the 3s.
The first formality was the pointless toss as skipper Edgington continued his impress form of 9 losing tosses in a row and the Sonning skipper quickly invited Binfield to bat and short while later after some good bowling Jeffery, Ali and Mills all found themselves back in the pavilion with the score 38 for 3. Only Vines was showing some resistance intertwined with a couple of lovely cover drives until he was undone by a peach of a delivery for 27 and Binfield 59 for 4. The youthful pair of Lewis Hall and Tom Williams mixed a good defensive with quick running and had taken the score to 94 before Williams was caught at point. Joe Sculley quickly followed which bought the skipper to the crease, this seemed to spur Hall on and he began to move through the gears and twice dispatched the Sonning leg spinner into the neighbouring gardens. Hall’s third six of the innings saw him pass his 50 however his keenness to get back on strike saw him strand Edgington, run out, halfway down the wicket. This seemed to affect Hall as a few balls later he also departed for well batted 57. A couple of lusty blows from Hayman, Henly and Docherty saw Binfield finish all out on 169 after 39.4 overs.
The wicket had shown that if the bowlers hit the right spots, it was not easy to score so now after consumption of tea it was up to the Binfield bowlers to show what they could do.
Docherty and Hayman were given the new ball, Docherty bowled down the hill with the elegance of a dancer whilst Hayman coughed and spluttered his way up the hill. Two very different styles however both were causing the Sonning openers untold trouble who although scoring very slowly had somehow survived and made it to 23 for 0 after 9 overs. Then Hayman struck, First, he bowled Anderson and Ahamed followed next ball LBW. Binfield had made the breakthrough and wickets began to fall at regular intervals. Hayman collected his third wicket with Sculley and Hall also registering a wicket added to a run out from Williams and Sonning were struggling at 59 for 6. Somehow still standing was the Sonning opener Rintoul who had played and missed repeatedly, his resistance was finally broken by Sculley and he departed for 34. Next in for Sonning was their PT instructor Raoul Harding and at the same time Binfield had turned to the wily spin of Henly. For once Henly was offline with his start and his first 3 balls departed for boundaries, he bounced back with his forth however and Harding was gone caught at long on by Hall and Henly was able to celebrate with his signature dance! The end was fast approaching Sculley claimed his third wicket having Tidbury trapped LBW and wrapped the win up a few balls later having Longbridge caught behind, Sculley politely informed the young school lad he was out and it was time to leave. Sculley finished with excellent figures of 4 for 28 and Sonning were all out for 106.
So unfortunately, no Clooney’s were spotted but the 100% record remained and Binfield headed to the top of tables with 3 wins from 3.
