Match report A polished 95 not out from Richard Higginson saw the 3rd XI home to victory by six wickets with an over to spare on a low-bouncing pudding of a track at Sol Joel Park. The fierce sun hadn’t had time to dry out the strip so Binfield put Earley in to bat and comprehensively tied up their top order with some wicked spin from youngsters Harry Jones and Nathan Warwick. Having been restricted to less than 3 an over for much of the innings, a late rally from Ollie Johnson, Earley’s 1st XI stalwart, who clubbed 99 not out saw them home to a total of 183-7 in the allotted 40 overs. ”That’s a few too many for us, I fear,” remarked ex-captain Colin Canty from the boundary at tea.

It was important for Binfield not to lose wickets if they were to set up an effective chase. Supported by Ram Devarakonda and Stephen Nower, Higginson steered the hosts to 81-1 at the half-way stage. “Very nice, but no front foot cover drives,” grumbled Canty. Soon after the drinks interval Binfield pushed ahead of the run rate and after Nower finally fell for a stylish 49, lost only one more wicket in reaching the target. “Never in any doubt,” said Canty. Higginson hit nine boundaries, mostly through the covers.
