Taplow CC v Binfield Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 19 May 2012 at 1.00pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Batsmen dominated proceedings in the Chilterns League First Division match between Taplow and Binfield. A youthful Binfield side, containing five players aged 17 and under, secured a thoroughly deserved winning draw against the reigning league champions.

Binfield captain, Paul Edgington, won the toss and decided to bat first and the decision paid dividends as the visitors opening pair of Steven Carson and Mark Usher put on 84 for the first wicket before Carson was adjudged lbw for a fine 53. Both batsmen worked hard against the home side’s strong bowling attack and this partnership laid the foundations for the Binfield innings. Following Carson ’s dismissal Usher took the dominant role in another excellent partnership of 86 with Adam Marshall. Both were dismissed in fairly quick succession – Usher for a fine 70 on his seasonal debut and Marshall, continuing his good early season form, for 34. Binfield’s innings didn’t falter with the two dismissals as Michael Allan-Canty (34 not out) and Barney Sykes (25 not out) allowed Binfield to close their innings on 252 for the loss of five wickets from their full allocation of 52 overs.

With limited seam bowling options available to him, Edgington opted not to take the new ball and continue with the old. Tony Boad and 16-year-old Jack Collett opened the bowling and bowled in tandem through the first 30 overs of the innings. Boad was his usual accurate self, conceding just 31 runs from his 15 overs – a magnificent performance! Jack Collett bowled beautifully and got the early breakthrough by deceiving the Taplow opener in the flight to clean bowl him. A period of recovery followed from Taplow as Habib Khan and Anton Livera put on 96 for the second wicket before Collett dismissed Khan with a smart bat-pad catch taken by wicket-keeper Greg Simmonds. Khan had been the more patient of the two batsmen but was beginning to look dangerous so his dismissal was a welcome relief to Binfield. Javed Khan arrived at the wicket at number four with a view to accelerating the home side’s reply. He survived a very close run out call on his first delivery as Barney Sykes throw hit directly as the batsmen scampered through for a single. The partnership between Khan and Livera kept the home side in the game as they maintained the required run-rate which was, by then, about 8 an over. The introduction of Steven Carson into the attack brought about the end of Taplow’s run chase as first Livera was dismissed for a fine 86 playing a rather ambitious and unnecessary reverse-sweep shot that resulted in him being adjudged lbw. Khan followed shortly afterwards for a hard-hitting 56 - again from the bowling of Carson . Two further wickets fell as the game drifted in the last few overs to the inevitable draw – one a stumping from Greg Simmonds from Carson ’s bowling and the other a smart run-out from James Collett.

With all 24 overs from one end bowled by bowlers Jack Collett, James Collett and Steven Carson, valuable batting contributions from Carson and Michael Allan-Canty and the wicket-keeping of Greg Simmonds all of whom are aged 17 or under and have progressed through Binfield’s junior section, the future looks very bright for Binfield CC.
