Binfield CC Unicorns U15 Match Reports

 With two matches on consecutive evenings, it was a busy start to our U15 Unicorns season.  With ten girls between the ages of 11 and 14 playing over the two games it’s an encouraging start.  The eight girls playing in each game were ably supported by three Under-11 boys.

 Tuesday’s match against Wokingham resulted in a fairly comfortable win thanks mainly to an outstanding bowling and fielding performance from the whole team which restricted Wokingham to 81 from their full allocation of 20 overs.  Bethany Dark was the pick of the bowlers with the outstanding figures of 2 wickets for 3 runs from 2 overs with Jakob Hinton also getting a wicket.  The other three wickets were from run outs – instigated by Poppy, Nellie and Jakob. The target of 82 was safely achieved within 12 overs without the loss of a wicket.  Izzy Carson retired having scored 30 and Poppy Evans remaining undefeated on 28.  Bethany capped a fine performance by coming in to strike the winning boundary.

 Wednesday’s match on a chilly evening at Finchampstead may not have resulted in a win for the team but was still a very pleasing performance.  Having been asked to bat first, Binfield got off to a flying start with 21 runs taken from the first over!  The loss of wickets slowed the run rate down and we batted our full allocation of 20 overs to finish with 100 for the loss of 6 wickets.  Izzy Carson again retiring, this time with 32.  Liam Gash was the other batter into double figures, batting well for his 18 not out.  It was pleasing that more children got to bat during this game and they will all have benefited from the experience.  The bowling and fielding was again very good but maybe not quite at the heights of the previous evening – largely I think due to the vast temperature difference between Monday and Tuesday.  Finchampstead had to work hard for their runs but they eventually reached the winning target with just over three overs to spare.  The two wickets that Finchampstead lost were a run out instigated by Poppy and an excellent catch behind the stumps from Thomas Williams off Abigail McKellar’s bowling.
